Ninja Nigel vs Alix Arndt on an epic road trip. 5 days, 5 competitions.
Day 1, Run 1: Body Hub Obstacle Centre
Darryl White has set a 500m undulating energy sapping racetrack shaped course. Run 1 5m34s. Run 2 5m32s, shaving 2 seconds off. Alix sprinted round in 4m55s but fumbled the low rings on her second run for a slightly slower 5m05s. Alix finishes 37 seconds clear with a new course record for the girls.
These are all Daryll’s photos, he did a far better job than we did.
Day 1, Run 2: PT Barn
Scotty, famously known for having no other name, has given us a 200m out and return course. Nigel scores 4m02s then a slightly better 3m55s all down to more grit with the tyre pull. Alix steamed ahead once again with 3m56s and 3m43s to finish 12 seconds clear and setting another course record for the girls. She is now 49 seconds ahead.
Day 2, Run 1: Obstacle Play Park
A ninja rich course. Next to no running at all. Nigel takes top spot with a blistering (literally) 3m16s and a new overall course record. Alix sets yet another course record for the girls in the most ninja-rich course so far with 3m47s. The gap narrows to Alix being 18s ahead.
Day 2, Run 2: Camelot Events (Home of Nuts)
Probably the longest course we did at around 800m with a delightful 250m sprint between two sets of obstacles. Apologies for the video quality, this one was hard to follow with the camera which is why there aren’t many videos of it.
I even put my watch on to get a gps trace for this one
Alix ran 7m00s then 6m29s. Nigel ran 6m27s then 6m14s. The day ends with Alix only 3 seconds ahead overall.
Day 3: Resting in Pembroke
What a fantastic place to climb. We were so tired we didn’t do anything but breathe in the amazing views.
Day 4: Maiden Castle, Pembrokeshire
After a day at the coast we headed north and found Maiden Castle, a pinnacle of ryolite (a volcanic rock) and put an inadequate amount of effort on some trad routes.
Day 5: HC Fit
We went to see fellow Ninja and buddy Henry Cookie and were joined by some Ninja legends. Speed Demon Martin Bamber cam along to give us all a target to aim for. Luke Allen ‘The Ninja Cameraman’ and Ninja Warrior Last Man Standing from Season ?? Johnny Urszuly even came along.
After round 1, Martin was 3/10ths of a second ahead. It was time to start biting nails and stretching out runs well past closing time.
Nerves were fraught, the speed was excessive. In the end Martin took the prize with 1m13s. Johnny was 2 seconds behind but was disallowed – he only did one run as he was busy teaching so I’m sure he’ll be back for more. Nigel took 2nd with 1:18 and Alix 3rd with 1m25s and her 4th top girl score and 5th top Female Masters out of 5 races. Not a bad haul.
Nigel and Alix both qualified for the Scotland final. It was a great day with Luke ‘The Ninja Cameraman’ Allen and Johnny Urszuly, Ninja Warrior UK’s Season 3’s Last Man Standing.
It has been almost a week now. We haven’t recovered. Lots of eating and sleeping, no training and definitely not running any courses!
